Hilda H. Polanco, Founder and Managing Director

Through offices in New York City and Chicago, Hilda provides practical, hands-on financial management and consulting services to nonprofit organizations. Over the last 19 years, she has built a specialized consulting practice focused on helping not-for-profit agencies create and maintain effective fiscal systems and policies, cost-efficient technology systems, and a human resource infrastructure that supports their program, fiscal and operating demands. In 2007, she spearheaded the creation and launch of the FMA Institute in order to address a critical need for the professional development of finance leaders in the nonprofit sector. The Institute serves nonprofits nationwide with internet-based courses as well as in-person customized workshops.
A recognized expert in the independent sector, Hilda has been invited by the New York Times Company to serve on the selection committee for the NYT Nonprofit Excellence Awards since their inception in 2007. She is a sought-after instructor, serving as an adjunct professor in Columbia University’s Department of Health Policy and Management, as well as on faculty with the Chicago Donors Forum.

She regularly conducts fiscal workshops for Columbia’s Institute for Not-for-Profit Management and was the keynote speaker at Chicago’s 2010 Donors Forum and Citi Foundation Nonprofit Day. She was also an invited presenter at the City of Chicago’s Delegate Agency annual Fiscal Conference.
Hilda currently serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Better Business Bureau Foundation and chairs the Foundation’s Hispanic Advisory Committee. She serves on the Corporate and Advisory Boards for Acelero Learning, an organization that partners with local communities to support high quality Head Start programs. Additionally, she serves on the National Advisory Board of the Harvard Journal of Hispanic Policy. Hilda has also served on the Board of Governance Matters. Other memberships include the American Institute of CPAs, New York State Society of CPAs and its Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee.
Hilda graduated from New York University with a B.A. in Accounting. She holds the Certification in Control Self-Assessment from the Institute of Internal Auditors, awarded to practitioners who can provide guidance on risk, controls, and business objectives.

Andrea T. Mills, Director

Andrea T. Mills, MBA, CPA, CCSA®, Director of FMA, works with nonprofit organizations, individuals, and foundations in financial management areas to help them make important fiscal decisions for their organizations. Her support enables organizations to improve the effectiveness of their giving and receiving of contributions through developing fiscal management tools, establishing appropriate fiscal policies and procedures, and advising on strategic decisions. She also spends time leading FMA’s training initiatives in New York, Chicago, and across the country for executive directors, fiscal staff and board members of organizations and foundations. Most recently, she has taught courses through the FMA institute, was presenter at the City of Chicago, Department of Family and Support Services Annual Fiscal Conference, and is a faculty member of Donors Forum of Chicago.
Andrea came to FMA with over 15 years of public accounting experience working with not-for-profit organizations and start-up venture capital companies through her association with a regional accounting firm and as a supervisor in the Philadelphia office of Grant Thornton LLP. At FMA, she held the position of senior manager for several years before being admitted to partnership as a Director in 2006.
In her ongoing volunteer work for the New York Chapter of Soroptimist International, the world’s largest professional women’s service organization, Andrea is a nongovernmental organization representative, providing reports to organization members on biweekly United Nations briefings that address economic development and human rights policies. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Unifem/USA, NY Metro Chapter and the Board of the Ireland/US Council.
Andrea holds the Certification in Control Self-Assessment (CCSA®) awarded by The Institute of Internal Auditors to practitioners who have proven their knowledge and are able to provide guidance on risk, controls, and business objectives. She is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and The Institute of Internal Auditors, and is an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Continuing Education, where she lectures on accounting issues for not-for-profit organizations. Andrea has an MBA degree from Drexel University and graduated magna cum laude with a BBA from Temple University.

Stuart Cohen, Director

Stuart Cohen, Director, leads FMA's development of new programs and initiatives. He has been a leading force behind the development of the FMA Institute, a training and professional development initiative offering nonprofit leaders and staff the education and support they need to effectively lead their organizations and manage their financial resources.
Stu joined the FMA team from FITA (Fiscal Infrastructure Technical Assistance), a service division of MHRA (Medical and Health Research Association of New York City, Inc.), where as Deputy Director he developed and implemented FITA's technical assistance services. While there, Stu instituted an outcomes-based fiscal training model combining workshops with one-on-one consulting services. He also led FITA/MHRA's Common Cents training program, serving over 50 community-based organizations (CBOs) nationally for the Centers for Disease Control. As Assistant Executive Director of the Momentum AIDS Project, a $3M CBO that provides meals, clothing and counseling services to New York City's low-to-no-income citizens living with HIV/AIDS, he was responsible for government contract relations, agency strategic planning and corporate administration.

Terence Cook, Manager, FMA Institute

Terence D. Cook, MPA, FMA Institute Manager, brings an in-depth knowledge of the not-for-profit sector, with a focus on fiscal accountability, governance and evaluation. At FMA, Terence works to design and implement fiscal, reporting and oversight systems and processes for not-for-profit organizations. Terence also has significant expertise in managing and innovating educational organizations and leads FMA’s efforts to support the charter school movement.
Terence has more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit management and local government, both in his native Great Britain and internationally. Prior to joining FMA, Terence was Director of Finance and Operations at the Stonewall Community Foundation where he managed all aspects of the fiscal, I.T. and H.R. functions of a charitable foundation, granting $1,000,000 per year to LGBTQ community-based organizations. Previously, Terence was Director of the Alliance for Nonprofit Governance (now known as Governance Matters), a collaborative organization dedicated to strengthening strong board leadership.
Terence’s other consulting experience includes providing services to the United Nations Development Program, where he planned the fiscal devolution of Cambodia and a training program for the country’s finance ministers. He also spent three years implementing education programs for Vietnamese asylum seekers in Hong Kong with the United Nations’ High Commission for Refugees.
Terence holds a Master of Public Administration from the Robert F. Wagner School at New York University and received a Bachelor of Education from South Bank University, London. He is an adjunct professor at Columbia University School of Continuing Education where he lectures on nonprofit financial management. Terence also serves on the board of Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Dipty Jain, Manager, Consulting Services

Manager of Consulting Services: Dipty brings comprehensive legal, internal controls and accounting experience to her leadership of FMA's consulting team, which helps nonprofits develop the fiscal infrastructure and policies and procedures to strengthen internal financial controls.
Prior to joining FMA, Dipty worked as a public accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. She also spent over four years performing domestic and international internal controls audits at Schering-Plough Corporation and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.
Dipty volunteers with Queens-based Andolan, organizing South Asian Workers, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Third Wave Foundation as Chair of the Finance Committee. She graduated from The College of New Jersey with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Dipty earned a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where she was a Sparer Public Interest Law Fellow, and worked as a legal intern with the ACLU Women's Rights Project and the Urban Justice Center's Community Development and Domestic Violence Projects.

Henry Lopez, Manager, Financial Outsourcing

Henry Lopez is Manager of Financial Outsourcing at FMA. Henry is responsible for overseeing the outsourcing function of FMA and he works closely with upper management and fiscal staff to ensure that financial procedures and operations are functioning in an efficient manner for the organization.
Before joining FMA, Henry was Vice President of Financial Reporting and International Consolidations Accounting Manager at Marsh USA where he was responsible for evaluating framework control environments and determining their operating effectiveness. Prior to that Henry was a manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers and senior auditor at J.H. Cohn, LLP a national Certified Public Accounting Firm. Henry has over 10 years of experience in audit engagements and various specialized accounting programs, including QuickBooks, MAS 90, and Go System Audit.
Henry received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY.

John Summers, Manager, Research and Development

John Summers is FMA's Manager of Research and Development. John works with nonprofit executives to help them define and understand their organizations' needs, and with other FMA team members develops programs to address those needs. John also heads FMA's internal and client-based research initiatives.
Prior to joining FMA, John worked with public policy research organizations as a research consultant and analyst, primarily focusing on issues of economic opportunity and political participation. He is active in numerous local nonprofit and faith-based organizations working for social and economic justice.
John holds a Master's degree in political science from Indiana University, and a B.A. from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

Jonathan Braver is a Senior Consultant at FMA. Jonathan provides not-for-profit organizations with fiscal management services including budget development assistance, preparation and analysis of financial reports, grants and contracts management and reporting, audit preparation, and oversight and support of internal fiscal staff.
Before joining FMA, Jonathan was Director of Finance and Compliance at East Harlem Business Capital Corporation, a non-profit community development and financial services organization. At EHBCC he directed the full range of the organization's fiscal activities, including management of loan portfolios, preparation of budgets and audit schedules, financial reporting and analysis, and management of city, state, and federal contracts.
Jonathan received a BA in Business Management from SUNY New Paltz and holds a Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional (CNAP) certificate.

Jing Cheng is an FMA Consultant, providing our clients with outsourced accounting services including processing accounts payable and accounts receivable, processing payroll transactions, reconciling bank accounts and producing and analyzing financial reports. Jing also works with organizations on preparing for their external audits, including developing audit schedules, and in implementing financial reporting systems.
Prior to coming to FMA Jing worked as a bookkeeper at Jimmary Associates, Inc. She also served as bookkeeper at the not-for-profit organization Chinatown Manpower Project. Rebecca Coker, MPA, Consultant, brings experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors to her work with FMA clients, which includes fiscal infrastructure assessments, improved processes and internal controls, indirect cost rate proposals, and development of policies and procedures.
Rebecca is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt with nearly a decade of experience in the for-profit sector, including several years at 3M, where she focused on using data to drive improvements using the Six Sigma DMAIC methodology. She led multi-functional teams in identifying, implementing and monitoring process improvements. As Rebecca’s volunteer experiences increased her interests in the nonprofit sector, she co-founded Momentum, a nonprofit engaging youth in self-development experiences. Its success prompted a career move into the nonprofit sector, where she has applied her operational experience in the areas of workforce development and the launch of new programs.
Rebecca holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a specialization in International Nonprofit Management and Policy from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University.

Gretchen Dystra, Senior Advisor to FMA in strategic communications, program development and resource development, has extensive management experience in both nonprofits and government agencies. Founding President and CEO of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation from April 2005 until May 2006, Gretchen had served under Mayor Bloomberg as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, the City's regulatory agency for small business.
Founding President of the Times Square Alliance (formerly the BID) she was one of the leaders of the dramatic reclamation of that area in the 1990s. Gretchen has held senior positions at the Rockefeller Foundation, the New York City Charter Revision Commission, and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation.
She has been a freelance writer and a teacher including two years (1979-81) at a teacher's college in Wuhan, China. Gretchen received her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a Masters in Education and later an Honorary Doctorate from the Bank Street College of Education. Alex Gonzalez is an Associate Consultant at FMA. Amy K. Gudgeon, MPA, Manager: Amy leads FMA’s Chicago office, where she assists clients in improving their financial management infrastructure, and facilitates management decision-making on strategic financial issues.
Prior to joining FMA, she worked as both Project Manager and Director of Grants Management with the City of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OMEC). Amy managed all Homeland Security grant programs, and coordinated all of OEMC’s contracts, including negotiation, compliance, and legal oversight. She also brings to FMA extensive leadership experience with charter schools. Amy was Deputy Director of External Affairs at Perspectives Charter School of Chicago, where she oversaw all fundraising to support an annual operating budget of over $3 million. She also managed all educational policy initiatives surrounding the Perspectives Replication project to build more charter schools across the country in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Renaissance 2010 and Chicago Public Schools. Amy participated in a charter school leadership program at the Harvard Kennedy School.
An artist and supporter of the arts, Amy was Director of Special Projects for the start-up team to build the first Children's Museum in downtown Atlanta. She is on the board of Tuesday’s Child, a member of the National Council for Jewish Women and active in parent groups supportive of Chicago Public Schools. Amy graduated from Indiana University with a BS in Public Affairs, and holds an MPA from the University of Illinois.

Bryn Murray, Consultant, Consulting and Advisory Services with FMA’s Chicago office, assists clients in developing, updating, and documenting fiscal policies and procedures, supports systems building around grants and contracts management, and carries out research for a variety of FMA projects, including competitive analysis for nonprofit services.
Bryn brings several years of nonprofit, government, and research experience to her work with FMA. She worked as a Program Associate for the World Affairs Challenge with World Savvy in San Francisco, managing the day to day activities of the program, including participant and volunteer recruiting and training, event planning, budgeting, and research-based resource development for middle and high school teachers. She has also worked as a Field Researcher for numerous social science projects with Population Research Systems. As an Intern with the San Francisco Mayor’s office of Public Policy and Finance, she collaborated with the Deputy Budget Director to oversee the city’s ARRA reporting process.
Bryn holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago’s Irving B. Harris School of Public Policy and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University.

She is a sought-after instructor, serving as an adjunct professor in Columbia University’s Department of Health Policy and Management, as well as on faculty with the Chicago Donors Forum.

She regularly conducts fiscal workshops for Columbia’s Institute for Not-for-Profit Management and was the keynote speaker at Chicago’s 2010 Donors Forum and Citi Foundation Nonprofit Day. She was also an invited presenter at the City of Chicago’s Delegate Agency annual Fiscal Conference.
Hilda currently serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Better Business Bureau Foundation and chairs the Foundation’s Hispanic Advisory Committee. She serves on the Corporate and Advisory Boards for Acelero Learning, an organization that partners with local communities to support high quality Head Start programs. Additionally, she serves on the National Advisory Board of the Harvard Journal of Hispanic Policy. Hilda has also served on the Board of Governance Matters. Other memberships include the American Institute of CPAs, New York State Society of CPAs and its Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee.
Hilda graduated from New York University with a B.A. in Accounting. She holds the Certification in Control Self-Assessment from the Institute of Internal Auditors, awarded to practitioners who can provide guidance on risk, controls, and business objectives.

Martha Ruiz is a bi-lingual, full charge bookkeeper at FMA responsible for providing on- and off-site accounting and bookkeeping services including analyzing and reconciling disbursements, deposits and bank statements, posting General Ledger journal entries and inputting financial data. Martha is also responsible for preparing quarterly balance sheets, and year-end closings. Martha is skilled at using numerous accounting software programs including FUND E-Z, QuickBooks, Quicken and MAS 90.
Martha worked in a public accounting firm prior to joining FMA, and has a Business Administration degree from Mercy College, NY.

John Summers is FMA's Manager of Research and Development. John works with nonprofit executives to help them define and understand their organizations' needs, and with other FMA team members develops programs to address those needs. John also heads FMA's internal and client-based research initiatives.
Prior to joining FMA, John worked with public policy research organizations as a research consultant and analyst, primarily focusing on issues of economic opportunity and political participation. He is active in numerous local nonprofit and faith-based organizations working for social and economic justice.
John holds a Master's degree in political science from Indiana University, and a B.A. from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

Hong Tran is an Associate at FMA. She provides our clients in the not-for-profit sector with outsourced accounting and consulting services, including posting of cash receipts and disbursements, posting of journal entries, bank reconciliations, and support in developing client accounting systems.
Hong graduated from Baruch College where she majored in Accounting. In addition to working for FMA she has also worked with MDLand where she provided accounting assistance as a Part-time Bookkeeper. Her tasks at MDLand included running aging summaries, managing accounts receivables, processing checks and maintaining proper record keeping of all transactions in their accounting system.

Anita Vichare, MPA, is a Marketing Associate for FMA. She promotes the services and products of FMA and has years of experience working with Government and Nonprofit organizations in communications, fundraising, and presentation/marketing materials development.
Prior to joining FMA, Anita worked in communications for the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) of Georgia. At TRS she assisted in developing, coordinating, and promoting financial trainings and events through the Customer Outreach Program. During graduate school, Anita also worked in the marketing and development department at United Cerebral Palsy of Georgia and she was an art educator and contract designer for the High Museum of Art. Prior to graduate school, Anita was a research fellow in the Business and Strategic Communications Unit for the Westinghouse Savannah River Site and the US Department of Energy.
Anita has a Bachelors Degree in Industrial (Product) Design from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Administration from the Andrew Young School of Policy at Georgia State University.

Richard von Bargen joined FMA in May 2008 directly from Andrea Mills’ Nonprofit Financial Management course at Columbia University, where he is pursuing a Masters Degree in Fundraising Management and Nonprofit Administration. His role on the Business Development team has evolved from Foundation Prospect Research to more general support of and interfacing with the communications, marketing and technology functions of the development unit as well as FMA/ERE. Rich is a graduate of Williams College with a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and was recently elected to the Williams Club Board of Governors. At 6’ 7” tall, Rich hopes that FMA will one day join a basketball league and enjoys spearheading other exciting and unique social outings for all of his colleagues in the meantime.

MPA, Senior Consultant: Sarah assists clients in designing and implementing effective fiscal policies, financial controls, and process efficiencies. She also manages FMA’s Associate program, which involves the recruitment and mentoring of graduate students pursuing careers in nonprofit consulting.
As an Associate with FMA, Sarah collaborated on a project with the Nonprofit Finance Fund to develop a prototype sustainability “scorecard” to rate the financial health of nonprofit organizations. Prior to joining FMA, Sarah coordinated the volunteer tutor program at Literacy Partners, Inc., a nonprofit adult literacy provider in New York City, where she trained program staff on volunteer supervision skills and developed the curriculum for training new volunteers. She also was a volunteer with AmeriCorps VISTA, where she managed community development projects at Mercy Housing California, a nonprofit affordable housing provider.
Sarah graduated from Tulane University with a BA in Political Science, and holds an MPA in Nonprofit Financial Management from New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
